Forensic science contributes significantly to the detection of crime and to the successful administration of justice. However, there are some cases in which expert evidence has contributed to miscarriages of justice and, while these cases are few in number, their impact on the public view of the criminal justice process can be significant. Apart from the implications for the wrongly convicted prisoner, for his or her family and for the victim, the image and standing of the expert can take a heavy blow from such cases. </p>
