Exhibition: Consider the Lilies

To celebrate the re-opening of The McManus: Dundee's Art Gallery & Museum, this showcase of around 50 Scottish masterpieces from 1910-1980 opened to the public on The McManus' official opening day - Sunday 28 February 2010. Most of the leading artists of the period are featured, including Edward Baird, John Bellany, The Scottish Colourists, Stanley Cursiter, Alberto Morrocco and James McIntosh Patrick.

Consider the Lilies is the title of a painting in the exhibition by Peter Collins. The pot of three lilies represents Dundee's coat of arms, which symbolises the Virgin Mary, the City's patron saint. Dundee has an artistic heritage of which to be proud. Its unique position on one of the most beautiful estuaries of Europe, has long been a source of creative inspiration. Many of the artists featured in the exhibition, such as Alberto Morrocco and James McIntosh Patrick, strongly identified with the City.

Admission to the exhibition is free. Opening hours: Mon to Sat 10am-5pm; Sun 12.30-4.30pm. Last entry is 15 minutes before gallery closing time.

Consider the Lilies is a National Galleries of Scotland Partnership Project with The McManus: Dundee's Art Gallery and Museum. It was first shown at the Dean Gallery in Edinburgh from October 2006 to early January 2007, and then at the Fleming-Wyfold Gallery in London from 25 January 2007 until 5 April 2007, during the refurbishment closure period.
