Race to the Pole - Terra Nova Centenary Exhibition at Discovery Point

Scott's race to the South Pole against Norwegian, Roald Amundsen is one of the most famous stories in the history of exploration. 2010 is the centenary of the beginning of Captain Scott's fateful National Antarctic Expedition of 1910-12 aboard the Terra Nova. To mark the occasion, Dundee Heritage Trust is producing a special exhibition of photographs and objects from its collections, many of which have never been publicly displayed before.

The show will feature stunning images of the Terra Nova, sledging parties, penguins and seals, vast icebergs, life in the hut at Cape Evans and portraits of the men including highly emotional photographs of the Polar party at the South Pole. Many are incredibly well-known iconic images by Herbert Ponting, the most famous of all Antarctic photographers.

There will also be showcases of archives and objects from the Trust's collections including an Emperor Penguin brought back by the Expedition, the remains of a cake sent to Captain Oates, wood from the Terra Nova's Wardroom, a pony snow shoe and poignant souvenirs relating to the death of Scott and his four companions.
