Angus in August

The summer holidays are now in full swing and, whether you’re looking for places to go and things to do close to home or are visiting Angus, there’s lots to choose from. From famous historical sites to specially-built visitor attractions to traditional seaside fun to walks in stunning countryside, there’s something for everyone.

The Summer in Angus brochure highlights a few of the events taking place across the county during August – and includes the chance to win a special family day out in Angus, with a VIP tour of Arbroath Abbey, a visit to Glamis Castle and a VIP guided tour of Pictavia.

The month kicks off with Montrose Highland Games on August 1 and closes with an evening of local and traditional songs by members of Angus Folk in Dunnichen, near Letham, on August 31, with a host of events sandwiched in between.

From August 3 until August 7, the beat of a far away land will be heard in one of the beautiful Angus Glens, when the African Drumming Village sets up camp in Glenisla, near Kirriemuir. Kirriemuir will also provide the setting for the Live in the Den Music Festival on August 14, when local bands will play in the natural auditorium of Kirrie Den. And fans of blues, jazz, R&B, rock and roll and Cajun music are in for a treat at the Bellrock Blues Festival, which takes place in Arbroath over the weekend of August 28/29.

As well as the Montrose Highland Games, there will be Highland Games at Cortachy on August 15 and Glenisla on August 20, while Carnoustie holds its annual Flower Show on August 20/21. Another highlight of the month will be Arbroath Seafest 2010, which takes place over the weekend of August 21/22. This celebration of the sea takes place around Arbroath Harbour and attracts over 300,000 visitors to the town every year.

“With more and more people holidaying either at home or closer to home than they normally would, this summer is a great opportunity to showcase how much there is in this area for visitors and those who live here,” said Cllr David May, Angus Council Tourism Spokesperson. “We are so lucky to have so much happening right on our doorstep – and in such wonderful surroundings.”
